As small as they are, thumb drives on your keychain still scream "DORK!" A $7 application released Tuesday turns your iPhone into a wireless drive, sparing you the need to carry around those pieces of dorkware.

We've been looking forward to Veiosoft's DataCase since it was announced in July, and we've had a chance to test it. It was so easy to set up we didn't need to consult an instruction manual.

To get started, you connect your iPhone and computer to the same wireless network; your computer will recognize your iPhone as a network device. You then select your iPhone on your computer and tap the button on your phone to allow an incoming connection. Then you can start dropping files into the Shared Folder, which saves the files onto your iPhone.

Quite convenient: It'll come useful for sharing files with your friends or carrying around data on the run -- to meetings, for example. One thing the app lacks is the ability to transfer files both ways -- that is, in addition to saving files on your iPhone, being able to save files from the handset onto your computer wirelessly. I'd personally like this capability to transfer photos, for example, without having to plug in and sync.

Nonetheless, this is only the first version of DataCase, and we can look forward to the developer making this app even more useful than it already is. So long, thumb drive. Who wants to be my date to prom?
