The latest study from YouGov has revealed that 76% of Britons could not live without the Internet, with 44% feeling frustrated when they're left unconnected and 27% experiencing rising stress levels; better known as "discomgoogolation":
"The proliferation of broadband has meant for the first time in history we've entered a culture of 'instant answers'. A galaxy of information is just a mouse click away and we have become addicted to the web. When unable to get online, discomgoogolation takes over," said psychologist Dr David Lewis, who identified discomgoogolation by measuring heart rates and brainwave activity.
To be fair we think it might be a little more complex than that, with many using the Internet as a vital business and personal communication tool for keeping in touch with clients, friends and family. Take this away and you cut off an incredibly important part of modern business and social life.
The study also revealed that over half of the population used the Internet for between one and four hours per day, with 19% spending more time online than with their family in a week. 47% also believed the Internet to be more important to peoples’ lives than religion, with one in five paying the Internet more attention than their partner.
