Folder Passwords
« on: November 04, 2008, 18:31 »
Hi all,

I wonder if you know how I can put passwords on folders on XP that are on a memory key ?

Do I need to get a special programme?  I don't understand why this wouldn't be available on XP already?

All I can find on the subject is about this "private folder" from microsoft but its not guaranteed by microsoft? And even then I'm not sure if it will work on a memory key that is being used on different pc's and laptops?  :-\

Any ideas guys please ?

Thanks

Hi Shell

Can't you right click on the folder, Properties then set who can view it in the security tab  ':|

Unless i'm misunderstanding the question which wouldn't be a first  :)x

Hi Michelle,

I think you can only password protect zipped folders, so first, right click the folder you want to protect, then Send To > Compressed (zipped) Folder.  Then you need to click on the now zipped folder, but don't Extract, click File > Add a password.  It should be fairly straightforward from then on.

Of course, this will then leave the original unzipped folder unprotected, so you can either delete that, or move it to a separate back up directory.  :)

you can do that on a shared network Cammy but I want this for work on a memory key.

I did read that you could do that Simon but I was hoping there was a way to just do it to normal folders, although I guess it won't make much difference to zip it - but then I will I have to make sure the PC or laptop being used has winzip or suck like to open it?

Or if anyone has another way, please let me know thanks.

I've never heard of suck like  ;D  but any Windows XP (or later, or possibly even earlier) machine will be able to unzip a folder, as the facility is built in.  It's only when you start using .rar files, and the like, that you need something special to open them.  :)

I though that most USB flash drives have an option to password protect the whole drive, have you checked the makers site ?
