BB Modem
« on: March 26, 2003, 19:28 »
I have had my Bt Broadband a little while but every day I have to reinstall my modem. I have had a trace put on my phone so I don't know if this has anything to do with it. Does anyone have any ideas?

Can you tell us a little more about the problem Whiskas? When you say you have to re-install the modem, is this because you are asked to by Windows or is it just that the modem doesn't survive a reboot?

It's a USB modem I take it? Is it mains powered or powered by the USB port?

Oh, and what operating system are you using? :)

Have you downloaded the latest drivers from BT yet? I'd certainly try this before anything else. If you are using the drivers supplied on the CD that came with the modem, they are almost certainly out of date.

The only other thing I can think of right now, is some kind of issue with the USB port. Did you try installing with the modem plugged into another USB port?

I found this on another website:-

Quote
AOL BROADBAND LINE OUT CRISIS DELAYS RELEASE
The Ariane Office Broadband ISP AOL, have not yet come up with a solution to the continual problems that have beset Ariane's BB Access, (or lack of it) for a number of weeks now.
To explain, AOL at first denied there were problems with their BB Service or the BT Voyager modems (supplied by BT) but have since admitted that "there is a problem" with the BT Voyager modems they have been shipping and the fact that they are among the reasons for the line continually dropping every 5 minutes or less. Technically, (we are told) the "VIA" and the "Intel 8 Series" chipsets don't get on too well with the little BT Voyager modem and AOL's Technical staff have advised us that we should purchase and install a LUCENT CHIPSET USB PCI Card to get around this problem - they say that the card has prduced positive results and for this reason we are told it offers a reliable solution to the 'dropped line' problem). Evidently VIA Chipset board users can download drivers from its website although Intel have not, at the time of this NEWS item, released any drivers on their website - we hope this is likely to change in the coming week so all of you AOL/BT Voyager users can find a solution to their problems.

It might be relevant :-\

it updates the drivers every time I have to reinstall I'll try the other port and see if that helps

Looks like you may be having the problem I had Whiskas. As Adept has pointed out there may be a problem with the chipset on your motherboard not being suited to your modem.I had to get a PCI card with 2 more USB ports on (I bought a Nisis one as the alternative available in that store had Via chips on)and disable the onboard ones before mine would stay connected, but mine was a bit more severe than yours as it would drop the connection if I moved off one website to another :o
I didnt have to reconfigure it each time it rebooted though  ???

I don't think it is dropping the line Sandra, just has to reconfigure the modem every time she switches the puter on.  It may just be the trace she has on her line, in which case hopefully when its removed it will be okay.  Anyway, I don't care  ;) you bb users should have some discomfort whizzing around everywhere  ;D :heehee:
