Topic: End of the world in 2012

I was watching a programme on TV today that was talking about ancient prophecies of different civilisations and people.
It seems that a lot of what the Mayans and early Chinese prophesised, amongst others, appear to have come true.
The Mayan calendar abruptly ends in 2012 and many of the other prophecies coincide with this date, including one from Merlin, the programme said that he was a real person or more probably a few people as it was a title of office rather than an actual name, that mentioned something about a major worldwide catastrophe following an unusual alignment of planets.

So this is probably one for Clive, Sam or any other astrologers  oops sorry, astronomers on the forum.
Is there going to be some special kind of planetary alignement in 2012

Before Sam's day but does anyone remember the so-called Jupiter Effect that was supposed to bring the world to an end n 1982?
