More than 210 billion emails were sent every day in 2008, but 70 per cent of these were spam according to figures compiled by Pingdom.
Pingdom, a website performance monitoring firm, estimated that 53.8 trillion spam emails were sent out to the 1.4 billion internet users in the world last year.
Asia has the most internet users, an estimated 578 million, with Europe trailing in second with 384 million. North America was in third place with 248 million users.
The number of websites on the internet as of 2008 was recorded at 186,727,854. Around 31.5 million new websites were added to the internet in 2008, Pingdom said.
Blogging continues to boom with more 900,000 posts added every day. In 2008 there were 133 million blogs on the net, with the total number of posts for last year coming to 329 million.
Facebook leads the way as the website with most photos; more than 10 billion photos are now on the social networking website. Flickr the photo sharing site owned by Yahoo has around three billion photos.
