Vista Outlook
« on: February 06, 2009, 15:45 »
I can't find outlook on my Vista Home premium PC.   :dunno:

Should it be there ?
Where should it be ?
If it wasn't installed when vista was, how do I add it on ? thru control panel ?

Thanks

I believe it's been replaced by Windows Mail in Vista.

Correct, Rik, if Andy was looking for Outlook Express.  Outlook, of course, is part of the MS Office suite.  :)

Right. ok thanks.

I have office on here. Should I stick with outlook or use windows mail ?

p.s I don't like change  :ack:

but would like to use what is built into the standard OS.

If I were to use mail and then wanted to take my mail databases back to XP, is that easy  ?

It's up to you what you prefer, Andy.  Windows Mail is what Outlook Express used to be, which is the built in Windows mail client.  Outlook is part of Office, and has the Calendars and other stuff included.

I have no idea as to whether you can transfer mail data from Windows Mail in Vista, back to Outlook Express in XP, but someone else may know.

I'd agree that Thunderbird is the best stand alone mail client.  :thumb:

I guess each to their own, Baz.  Having multiple email accounts, I find them easier to manage 'separately', as TB does it, rather than having everything in one inbox, as with Outlook / OE.  I know you can set up filters, etc, but it's not quite the same.  It's also part of the Sea Monkey suite, which I use on my main PC, and I've just got used to it.  I would consider moving back to Outlook, as I like the calendar feature, but it would be too much hassle converting and transferring about 6 years worth of mail over to it now.

Going back to AKs original Question,

Outlook can be found by, clicking on the globe bottom left corner and on start search entering OUTLOOK ..and it should show you it's there.

Oh mutter mutter.

Had a quick play with MAIL. Doesn't reckognise the old outlook express data files .dbx so I would have to convert them, which I don't want to do.

Tried Outlook (comes with office). I think this is going to have simlar problems at it just uses .pst files.

Anyone know how I can install Outlook Express on vista (the version which comes with Win 98 & XP) ?

Copy the files across ?  I'll give it ago........

EDIT:
Tried copying files from win98.
Tried to start, Can't find MSOE.DLL

I guess I might be better using the XP version

Outlook is part of Microsoft Office, Andy.  It doesn't come separately, as far as I know, and Office is a separate installation, not part of Windows.  Which version of Office do you have?

I'm fairly certain Outlook Express was only available with Internet Explorer, up to IE6.  In Windows Vista, Outlook Express is replaced with Windows Mail. Windows Live Mail has since been released as the successor to Outlook Express and Windows Mail, and is available as a stand alone application.  I'm not sure if that will help, as, to be honest, I'm a bit confused as to what you're trying to do.
