I've been told I have to use Java to view a remote machine but how do I know if it's installed on my machine?  Is it safe to use because I have always understood that it should be avoided because viruses can hide in it?  Where should I install it from and which version should I install?   Thanks in advance for any input.

I dont know why youd need it for remote viewing though, which program are you using ?

You'll probably find it's installed anyway, Clive, as many websites require it.  It'll be in your Add / Remove Programs list.

Thanks Sandra and Simon.  It's bespoke software called Coravel viewer which is to view an instrument attached to a telescope at Cambridge.  I do in fact have it after all!
