Yet another reason to get an open source operating system.

MS-Windows 7 started edition can only runs 3 apps at a time. This is worse than MS-DOS limitations. Is Microsoft nuts? You can install Ubuntu and run as many apps you want for the Internet and office work.

We will soon be driven back to coal-fired computers!

:believe:  I was thinking of getting a new computer (buying one ready made this time), when W7 came out, but I think I'll stick to faithful old XP, thanks.  How ridiculous is that!

I heard M$ is thinking that operating systems will be obsolete and that future applications will stand alone, interacting directly with the machine rather than through an intermediary system.  As a computer user who likes to run multiple applications simultaneously, I find this approach rather surprising.
There is no opinion, however absurd, which men will not readily embrace as soon as they can be brought to the conviction that it is readily adopted.

It will be interesting to see if and how that develops, Gill.  Can't quite imagine a PC with no operating system.  :dunno:

It would be impossible - there has to be a basic OS, even if it's reduced to a more sophisticated BIOS.

... an embedded linux chip (e.g. this security tool: http://www.yoggie.com/) would do it :-D  - no one will ever just want one application at a time

When you think about it, if you've got your anti-virus, browser and mail client running, that's it, you can't do any more, and if you have a stand alone firewall, you'd have to dump one of those.  Useless!

I guess the idea is - trust microsoft! .. .actually it probably only allows you to run 3 processes so that they can fill the rest of your processor up with their security software. Saying all this though, this is the spec for the low end edition - I bet their premium edition will let you run... 5 processes!
