Topic: PnP Bios problem

Hi Folks.

My Son has just brought his Girl friends puter round for me to have a look at  .

Running ME

He tells me its not running right!!.. so I looked in system properties and found a yellow ? against.

System Board Extension for PnP Bios, I cant seem to repair this as the button is locked on that part for some reason.

I would be grateful if anybody has any ideas what this could be or how I can repair it.

Hi Hook  

I'm not sure what mobo you are using, you could try one or more of these:

1) Go to Device Manager  via Start | Settings | Control_Panel  then click on System. Remove "System board extension for PnP BIOS" from Device Manager, and then reboot your computer. When Windows loads up again, it should reinstall the device. Hopefully, it will install it without the conflict this time. If you have the Win Me CD, have it handy just in case.

2) Go into BIOS. Go to PCI / Plug and Play Setup, then change Plug and Play Aware O/S to Yes. It may already be yes. You could then try No. What the hell, right?

3) Update Device Drivers (video, sound, motherboard). My guess is that you have an SiS730S-based motherboard, so you may need this page sometime: http://www.sis.com/support/driver/

4) In BIOS, disable devices that you do not use -- maybe Parallel Port, Serial Ports, etc. This will free up some IRQ's.

5) Update BIOS (a.k.a. Flash your BIOS). Make sure you know what you're doing (i.e. How to Flash BIOS), if you plan on proceeding with this option.

All sorted .. ty for that info Bat.. everything I tried on there failed apart from the flashing the Bios.. now why would the bios get turned on by me flashing Hmmm .

That bit is a bit above me.. so took the easy option  8) , Format C:\ clean Instal, now all sorted.

I'm pleased you got it sorted Hook, thanks for letting us know. Shame it was a clean install that was required
