Firefox crashing.
« on: August 31, 2009, 09:21 »
Firefox automatically updated a week or so ago, and ever since it's been crashing.  >:(

How do I go back to the previous version or uninstall the updates?

I wasn't going to worry about it and hope that it would sort itself out with all the reports I've been sending to Firefox, but it's getting beyond a joke.

What add ons do you have?  It could be one of them struggling with the update.

Add Block Plus
Bug Me Not
Download Helper
Firefox Showcase  (didn't know I had this one)  :dunno:
Smiley Extra
StumbleUpon
TVU Web Player
Web Mail Notifier

And a couple that aren't functioning, and one that is odd.

Smiley Extra 4, which has been out dated, but I use it occasionally as the other one is rubbish.

Microsoft . NET Framework Assistant ??

Disable them all, MB, see if FF is then stable. If it is, enable them one by one until you identify the culprit.

I find Firefox tends to freeze when it hits websites which are rich in embedded video.
There is no opinion, however absurd, which men will not readily embrace as soon as they can be brought to the conviction that it is readily adopted.

Adblock plus can cause crashes at times

But it does seem after the update firefox has began to use more CPU and memory
There are workarounds on the net

Like Rik said disable the addons and start them one at a time untill the crashes stop

Thanks everyone.

This happened to me last time Firefox updated.

I don't really need most of the Add ons, the only one I need is Web Mail Notifier.

So I'll disable all of them and see how I go.

And I think you're right Gill, as soon as I open a few tabs with high demand content the cpu goes nuts and it's not long before the Firefox debug thingy pops up.

What are the workarounds, Davy?

flashblock plus works to an extent
There is a tweak that you can do with the new firefox it helps the CPU a bit

A word of caution remember what you changed keep notes so you can undo them if necesary

These will speed up firefox and help some

I'm not having any more problems, well with firefox, at any rate.  ::)

But I can't believe the amount of ads on some sites  :o  Unbelievable!!

Even bloody ebay. And the funny thing is, some of these ads are for counterfeit DVDs, bloody hysterical.  :haha:

I did have one error message. Ash Web Sv. exe Application Error Break Point

Michael said it had to do with running out of memory or something??

Ash Web Sv. exe is the web protection for avast anti virus it will crash on some web pages

its not a real problem it repairs itself

adblock plus will stop some of the adds on pages but then it can slow down or cause firefox to crash

Thanks Davy, that's great.

Nice to know what the problem was. I could do without all the ads though.

It's still crashing, well once or twice.

How easy is it to go back to a previous version?

Preferably one that is a little more stable and one that I can use a proxy with.

Oh, and which proxy is the best?

I've had a look at proxy addons for firefox.

Firefox is very flakey these days.  Why not try an alternative like Seamonkey or Opera?

seamonkey or Google chrome are better choices

If you definately want to go back to an earlier firefox they can be found here

http://www.oldapps.com/old_version_list_web_browser.php

But I will warn you you will lose all passwords and store info on firefox  and some of the older versions just dont work anymore

The most stable version was 2.0 and before
and they do have security problems
