I wonder if the ethernet cable is the right one but I think the pc would detect it as connected even if it was the wrong one.
There are two types of cable, a crossed one for pc to pc and a straight one for pc to modem or router.

If you power up the router and have the cable connected from the pc to the router without the router being connected to the modem, does it show as the cable being unplugged ?

Hello Simon.

No, it didn't ask me to when I swapped the USB to the RJ45 connection. If the cable modem is already setup and working (albeit via the USB conection) do I need to remake the Network connection via the wizard? It seems strange that the PC is saying that a NIC cable is unplugged.

That's why I'd be inclined to try another cable, Andy. A connector may have failed.

It was just a shot in the dark, Andy.  I just wondered, as the connection had been USB, whether it needed to be re-established for the Ethernet connection.

You are only really connecting to the router via the ethernet cable to be able to set up the wifi connection on your laptop.
You dont need to make a connection for ethernet like you do with USB.
