I dont think I've tried any of these distributions, gonna take something major to get me away from Ubuntu/Debian though.

Might be worth me trying something else on the Eee PC, if it gets round the screen dimming issue.

that's just that program crashing - tis odd as I've not seen others have that. you could try the new ubuntu, which is specifically setup to handle these tiny notebooks.
