Bios fails to recognise hard disk

Does anyone know why would the bios occasionally fail to recognise a hard disk & if it does recognise it it frequently fails during usage?  

Someone is attempting to blind me with science as an excuse for not updating a website so I thought I would ask the experts.

My first thought is that there may be a loose wire
Try the EIDE cable and the power cable, make sure they are secure

Start with the easy things  ;)

It may also be set to the wrong size in the BIOS,if it hasnt been set to Auto detect  :-*

Thanks Sandra.  I'll let him deal with the cables first and see if he comes back to me.
