Google’s been taking it on the chin from traditional publishers (i.e., News Corp. chairman Rupert Murdoch) a lot lately. So it should come as no surprise that the search giant has come up with a new way for media sites to throw up a digital checkpoint where money or credentials can be demanded from readers who got there in a Google search.

I wonder why they are trying to placate Murdoch in this way. If he wants to charge for news, he can just go ahead and do so.

yeah, I also wonder how many people use google directly for news (I use their rss reader, but would never consider adding any of Murdoch's s**t)

The trouble is, though, it only takes a couple to jump on the bandwagon, and they will all be doing it.  :(
