The new HP netbooks (Minis)
« on: December 06, 2009, 15:43 »
Have what is termed an 'instant web' function, which the machine boots into without going near Windows, taking 4-5 seconds to do so. I'm guessing it's running Linux from a solid-state drive, or possibly the HD, but I wonder if anyone can confirm that, please?

Thanks, Sam. The full boot goes to Win7, but for a quick browse, I rather like the idea of a speedy boot like that. Any tips you can offer?

If you're asking is the full boot on another machine, no. If, otoh, you're asking if I want Linux tips for another machine, the answer is still no. ;D I just wanted to know if you think there's anything I would want to nail down, or could tell me whether I could add a different browser if I don't like theirs (couldn't see what it is and haven't been able to find out).

It is, and so did I - that and the LED screen sold it to me.

I see - you could probably install a whole new operating system. If its based on Ubuntu then it will probably come with firefox etc. I can give you software tips and help with installing things. Though if it is Ubuntu based the under Applications there should be an Add/Remove option. Though I guess it depends on how much disk space there is etc... I've not been able to find out much decent info about whats in there... guess you'll have to see for yourself and report back..

You're right Sam, there's bugger all information on the HP site, and few reports I could find via Google. I'll be back with questions when I get it.
