The UK is in 10th place in a list of nations hosting the most malware-infected websites, according to security researchers.
Nearly two per cent of malware-infected websites are hosted in the UK. This puts the UK 10th in the list of nations hosting the most malware, well behind the US which hosts 37.4 per cent of all infected websites, security firm Sophos said.
Russia and China are second and third on the list with 12.8 per cent and 11.2 per cent respectively. China's figure is a massive drop from the 27.7 per cent it accounted for at the end of 2008.
"That may surprise some people, as so much emphasis is given in the media to cybercrime and hacking attacks originating from China. But you need to remember that just because the malware is planted on the web in these countries doesn't necessarily mean that the hackers themselves are based in the same place," Cluley said.
In fifth, Germany is the top European nation with 2.6 per cent of malware-infected sites. The figures are taken from Sophos' 2010 Security Threat Report.
