What's the OS, Lona?  Are you using the right Java version?  This may help:

so is it XP 64?

What error does it give when you try to install it?

There are lots of different Java versions available on http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp
(actually this links to the page Simon suggested)

It also appears to depend on the webbrowser you are using.

It's windows 7 64bit system, Sam but 32bit internet explorer.

I have downloaded every available download on that site.  I managed to install a very old JRE from an archive java page.  It installed but internet explorer closed down whenever I tried to load an applet

hmmm..

according to: http://java.sun.com/javase/6/webnotes/install/system-configurations.html

For Windows 7 64bit with 32bit IE... it should work for firefox 32bit and 64bit IE 8.

The package that should do this (32bit firefox, 64bit IE) is http://java.sun.com/javase/6/webnotes/install/jre/install-windows.html

Tried that as well Sam.  I think there must be something wrong with her files as when I tried to install winzip I got the very same message.

I'm doing a chekdisk at the moment.

Oh well, I've exhausted every solution.  I've told her to take it back to curry's and tell them to install java or give her her money back.

This seems to be a wide spread problem since microsoft stopped issuing the java plugin on internet explorer 8.

No it didn't Sam but I've just found out firefox have a 64bit browser.  I've given the laptop back and told her to go back to currys and say the laptop is not fit for purpose and to install windows7 32 bit version or she's taking them to trading standards for having miss sold goods to her.

Lots of her old software won't install either.  Microsoft are not daft when they introduce 64bit operating systems which encourage people to go out and buy updated software.
