Topic: Wireless desktop

I'm thinking about moving the furniture around in my study so that my computer desk is nearer to the radiator on the opposite wall.  I understand that for about £15 I can buy a USB wireless dongle so I can leave the router where it is.  Any suggestions as to what I should get?

Yes you can, but it will be slower than a wired connection when talking to the rest of the network. If you're using a Netgear router, get a Netgear dongle. OTOH, a longer ethernet cable will be cheaper and more reliable. Also, consider that siting a computer by a hot radiator is not ideal.

If it's in the same room, I think I'd be tempted to simply get a longer Ethernet cable, and run it wired, Clive.  That, or get a wireless network card, if there isn't one installed already.

I bought a wireless usb adaptor for my 2nd desktop on Plusnet and there is virtually no difference in speed.  I just plugged it in, it asked for an internet connection to find and download software and then it just worked effortlessly.  I had to put in my router password and I was away.

I don't think it's any slower Angela.  My connection is still 5.5Mb/s using the wireless adaptor.

The speed of your internet wont be anly slower Clive as a wifi connection is faster than your internet speed. Rik was saying that your network connection, ie your connection between other pcs will be slower as they are capable of transferring data at 100mbs if the older type or 1000mbs if the latest type
