Bulletin board access back then was charged at national rates and was just 9 bp/s if I remember correctly.  I used to belong to one called Starbase 1 and half the time it was impossible to log into it.

I remember dial up at 1p per minute.  :)

Cheap at half the price.  That's what my AOL connection cost.
