OSS vs proprietary software quality and usage.

I get the argument thrown at me quite often that if open source software (hereon in OSS) is so good then why are people not using it? Actually there is quite a lot of OSS in use by a lot of people. Some programs have been very successful, ie. firefox, mysql, apache to name some and some are not as successful, ie. Linux, gimp and open office.

"The reasons given to me that these unsuccessful programs are not used in place of their proprietary counterparts is that the quality of the programs are not good enough to enable them to be used as drop in replacements and don't have the features that the proprietary programs have."
