Quote
Leiston 3 Haverhill Rovers 2

(After Extra Time)

Two outstanding strikes from Stuart Boardley saw ten man Leiston book a second round berth at the expense of nine man Haverhill. The home side were without the suspended Cunningham and Smy as well as the injured Heath as they looked to keep their twelve match unbeaten record in tact. On a heavy pitch due to persistant rain Leiston started well. On 3 minutes Ottley-Gooch burst clear only to be felled by M Hunt who received a yellow card, Calver firing the resulting free kick wide. Wardley almost threaded home Boardley's pass while O'Brien glanced wide Strong's excellent cross for Rovers. It was the visitors who broke the deadlock on 16 minutes when Emmanuel's cross was powerfully headed home by M Abbott from 15 yards giving Stannard no chance low to his left. Leiston responded with Ingham clearing Boardley's shot off the line after a fine move but were dealt

a blow when Ottley-Gooch hobbled off to be replaced by Norfolk. Two minutes later Rovers doubled their lead. D Head hauled down O'Brien inside the box giving Referee Oldershaw no option but to point to the spot. It was the fourth penalty

conceded by the Leiston skipper this season and after receiving a yellow card, Stuart Wardley drilled home the penalty. Just before the interval M Abbott forced Stannard into another save as the visitors ended the half strongly. Leiston returned after the interval supporting a back three and took the game to Rovers in the hope of keeping in the competition. Brothers shot straight at Morrison and then Boardley's vicious shot just cleared the bar. Leiston were pressing hard and from Boardley's cross D Head's header found Wardley whose point blank header was well stopped by Morrison. Leiston introd

uced Block for S Head and his introduction brought more impetus. Three minutes later the visitors were reduced to ten men when skipper M Hunt received a second yellow card for a lunge on Saker. From the free kick Morrison pushed Boardley's kick onto the post. Finally on 76 minutes Leiston found the net as Block flicked onto Boardley whose cross found the unmarked Wardley to nod home his first goal of the season from ten yards. Three minutes later the tie was level. Boardley picked up the loose ball from thirty plus yards and sent an arrowed shot over the full stretched Morrison. Leiston could sense victory and Brothers excellent shot skimmed the visitors bar and then Morrison denied Harrop. Morrison then picked up a yellow card for handling out of the area while in stoppage time Harrop received a straight red for kicking out and M Abbott followed suit for retaliating against Harrop as the tie went into extra time. On a heavy pitch there were now some tiring legs but still Leiston pressed. Boardley's searching pass released Brothers but he lobbed wide then Rovers somehow kept the ball out of the net after Calver's shot was cleared off the line by Ingham. The ball was only half

cleared to Boardley whose strike was brilliantly tipped onto the post by Morrison. The game was now slowing and a replay

looked ineviatable. But then with just two minutes left, Leiston clinched the win. It was that man Boardley yet again collecting a pass in central field and unleashed an unstoppable shot from 25 yards that beat Morrison all ends up. A goal worthy to win any game.

They say the sign of a good side is when they win by not playing well, this was proved today! After all the exertions of Tuesday's win, Leiston were sluggish first half but finally realised they were in a game before it was too late. Boardley's goals were top drawer and both with his right foot!

Leiston: Stannard, Saker, Wardley, D Head, Goldfinch, Calver, Harrop, S Head (Block 70 mins), Ottley-Gooch (Norfolk 37 mins), Boardley, Brothers. Subs not used: Kerslake and Payne.

Haverhill Rovers: Morrison, P Abbott, Strong, Wardley, Ingham, Challis, M Abbott, M Hunt, O'Brien (Boreham 99 mins), Emmanuel, Higgs

(Harper 45 mins, Clarke 107 mins). Sub not used: P Hunt.

Match: Mark Goldfinch
