Definitely turn it off first Michelle.  You will see a diagram of the inside of your computer in the handbook and the RAM will be labelled.  Here is a video of how to change RAM but it will help you to reseat it too.

Thanks Clive I have added ram before but thanks so much ;)  My claim to fame was replacing a screen on a laptop via a tube instructional video lol :)
