Open Dialog Box in XP
« on: May 05, 2003, 19:37 »
When you are in a program in windows XP, say Notepad, and you want to open a file, when you go FILE, OPEN, it brings up a dialog box. On the left there is a List of shortcuts with a heading of "Look In", so you can easily click to your "My Documents", or your "Desktop", or your "My Computer" folder.

I want to know how I can customize this list and put in a shortcut to say, "My Notepad Documents" or any other folder I want. Any ideas? Thanks

I've been searching for an answer on this one, but so far drawn a blank.   ???

Keep checking back, TheGallery, and hopefully someone will come up with something, but I have a feeling a compromise might be needed - say, create a taskbar shortcut?

Yeah Simon, you know why I'm asking is because I use FrontPage to make my websites. I have them located in the "My Webs" folder. When I'm in Frontpage I go to open a website I want a shortcut to that folder, and for some reason, of all the folders that should be listed, My Webs is not. My Webs is not the only location I use, but it is the primary location, and I hate having to go through an extra click to find it!

I was able to add it in Win 98 a couple years ago, but I can't remember how I did it. I just moved to Win XP with my new Tablet PC !!! this weekend.

Well, I'm not familiar with FrontPage, but still haven't come up with anything.  I'd be surprised if it wasn't possible, especially as you did it with 98, but for the moment, I can only suggest creating a desktop shortcut, and putting it in your taskbar.  It will then be easily accessible from wherever you are.

Sorry not to be of any more help.   :-\

Sorry I am late TG.thanks for the vote of confidence Clive  8)

I have been out all evening sitting in my local casualty department  :o and have only managed to see your query in the last 15 minutes or so.
This looks promising but I havent had time to check it out properly yet and unfortunatly due to my trip to casualty being related to my eyes hurting  due to conjuctivitus I dont think its a good idea to spend too long at once on the PC  :(

The Places Bar is a column of shortcut icons located on the left side of Windows' standard File Open and File Save dialog boxes. The easiest way to customize it is by using Microsoft's Tweak UI freeware. There are separate versions of Tweak UI for Windows XP and for every other version of Windows; the XP version is part of PowerToys for Windows XP. Download the version for your OS at PowerToys for Windows XP (scroll down as needed).

Available here :
http://www.pcworld.com/downloads/file_description/0,fid,18220,00.asp

Windows XP: After you download and install PowerToys for Windows XP, select Start, All Programs, Powertoys for Windows XP, TweakUI for Windows XP. In the left pane, click Common Dialogs. For further instructions, skip to "All versions" below.

All other Windows versions: Once you've successfully downloaded and installed Tweak UI, select Start, Settings, Control Panel, and double-click Tweak UI (in Windows Me, you may have to click view all Control Panel options first). If you find that your Tweak UI dialog box doesn't include three rows of tabs, upgrade to the current version. Click the Open tab.

All versions: Click the Custom places bar radio button. Below that, you'll find five pull-down menus representing the five Places icons. You can change any icon by selecting a different folder from the pull-down menu or by typing the full path to a different folder (see FIGURE 1).

Hope that this does what you want and turns out to be easy to use as it sounds like a useful feature to have  :-*

Edited to enable full url to work   ;)

Just had a quick check and it does replace the shortcuts   8)

Unfortunately mine still needs me to select all files as it defaults to a specific one which isnt always the one I want  :(

Anyway we can always sort that one out another day when I am feeling better  :-*

Meant to attach this to show you how easy it is to change  8)

You can solve everything Sandra!   ;D  Sorry to hear about your conjunctivitis though.  How did you contract that?  Are you a contact lens wearer?  I wore contacts for a while but I developed conjunctivitis too and had to go back to wearing glasses.  It's a nasty affliction isn't it?

I do wear them occassionally but its about 6 months or more since I had them in Clive.
Its a complete mystery to me as I have never had it before and was worried as my eyes looked like I had lenses in  :o
The only thing I can think of is that I may have developed an allergy to dogs (I hope not as I look after quite a few peoples from time to time and love dogs ! ),as I started rubbing my eyes a few weeks back when I was looking after "Charlie".
If its not that then its possibly a side effect of the anti smoking drug (Zyban) I have been taking for a similar length of time to when the initial  problem started.
Who says smoking damages your health  ::) I never had sore eyes when I smoked  :'(

I hadn't realised you were taking Zyban.  I just looked up side effects on Google but it doesn't mention eye problems.  I went to the pharmacist and he gave me eye drops which cured my conjunctivitis very quickly.  But as soon as I put my lenses back in it came back.  This looks an interesting website.

I found another too but if you read it you would start measuring yourself up for a coffin which is quite ridiculous.  ;D  Medical books!  Bah!

Perhaps Charlie had something in his fur, or left a 'calling card' somewhere and you got it on your hands, and into your eyes?  It definitely sounds like an infection (without wishing to state the bleeding obvious).  Perhaps something was on your pillow?

Anyway, hope you feel better soon, Sandra.   :-* :-*

Thanks all for your help, and especially Sandra. I got the The tweak program thing and followed instructions and now I have what i wanted. Well done. I know whatever I did before in Win98 was not nearly as involved. Anyway though, this worked and now I'm all set. Thanks again.

sorry for the delay. I have trouble keeping up with all the interesting forums I look at. I really like the feature that emails you when you get a response. I think I forgot to use it fist post.
