Microsoft offers $250,000 bounty for botnet maker

Rustock was sending up to 30 billion spam messages a day when Microsoft helped take it down in March, using copyright law to seize servers as spam was being sent featuring the software giant's logo.

Now, Microsoft is looking to track down the criminals responsible by offering the massive reward to anyone supplying information that leads to an arrest and conviction.

"This reward offer stems from Microsoft’s recognition that the Rustock botnet is responsible for a number of criminal activities and serves to underscore our commitment to tracking down those behind it," Richard Boscovich, senior attorney with Microsoft's Digital Crimes Unit, said in a blog post.
