Is Open Office any good? I'm setting up a new netbook for a family member and she wants a Word compatible software installed on it.

Yes. It's great and easier than the new word. I've been using open office and now libre office for years.

I've got it on my laptop, and find it perfectly OK to use, as long as you remember to save things in 'Word' formats, so other people can open them.

Great thanks very much for that. I've deleted the trial version of Norton's and installed Avira and also Chrome. Now I'm downloading 77 Windows updates.

I think it's antivirus software from Avant.
Anyway, Open Office successfully installed and all documents saved as Word 2007. Hopefully the extra RAM will turn up tomorrow and I can present it to her as a working machine.

It's the same machine that I bought for myself. I just hope I've sent for the correct RAM stick. All I know is it's 2Gb and made by Kingston. The photo looks right.
