While the Russian Federal Space Agency (Roscosmos) prepares for the pending destruction of its Phobos-Grunt spacecraft, an ambitious program focusing on lunar exploration is moving to center stage. Although the Soviet Union launched three successful lunar sample return missions, the last such probe was Luna-24, in 1976.

I was relying on Phobos-Grunt being destroyed because I've written an article about Russia's inability to deliver interplanetary probes for our local paper.  I would have looked complete idiot if they had managed to rescue it.

I didn't actually realise the Russians were still in the space race.  With America virtually out of the picture, that gives them a clear playing field, doesn't it?

No, the Indians and Chinese will be busy.
