One dark night in a small town, a fire started inside the local sausage factory. In a matter of minutes the entire building was engulfed in flames. The alarm went out to all the fire stations for miles around.
When the first firemen appeared on the scene, the sausage company president rushed to the fire chief and said, "All our secret sausage recipes are in the vault in the centre of the factory. They must be saved at all costs. I will donate £5,000 to the fire crew that brings them out and delivers them to me." But the roaring flames held the fire fighters off. Soon more fire departments had to be called in as the situation was in danger of getting completely out of control. As the firemen arrived, the chief fire officer shouted out that the offer to rescue the recipes was now £10,000 to the fire department that could save them.
Suddenly, from up the road, a lone siren was heard as another fire engine came into sight. It was the the Local reserve volunteer fire department composed mainly of firemen over the age of 65. To everyone's amazement, the little run-down fire engine operated by the elderly fire fighters, raced past the fire engines parked outside the gates and without a moment's hesitation drove straight into the middle of the inferno.
From a distance, the other firemen watched in admiration as the old-timers jumped off and began to fight the fire with an astonishing performance of fire-fighting skill. After a short time, they had extinguished the flames and saved the secret recipes.
The grateful sausage company president joyfully announced that for such a superhuman accomplishment he was upping the reward to £200,000, and walked over to personally thank each of the brave elderly fire fighters. A TV news team rushed in after capturing the event on film. The reporter asked the 70-year-old fire chief, "What are you going to do with all that money?"
"Well," said the chief, "The first thing we'll do is fix the f*cking brakes on that truck."
