Topic: Windows Media Player aint working

My friend has got windows 98 and a good spec pc, not totally sure, 108MB ram or more i reckon...

Anyway, Recently his windows media Player 7 had stopped working. when he tried to play something it said connecting on status bit like usual bit then hanged and froze...finally ctrl alt del said not responding.  he has tried re-installing etc no avail.  I installed version 9 and it said his system was running low on memory and then it closed down, when he tried to play a file.

Now he has uninstalled thatand i have got him to delete all windows media player from the registry and restart, now he gets the error RUNDLL32  This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down ((ONLY WHEN INSTALLING WIN MEDIA 7))  and then setup says it failed.  

He also had problems when he was installing version 9 as i mentioned earlier but that installed 3 or four times after trying...

PLEASE HELP, it used to work, then one day in afternoon it stopped


help would be very appreciated

P.S.   i recommended using RealPlayer or winamp but he couldnt use these either?

Maybe he/she just needs more RAM can buy it per MB cheaper than buying lego per block nowadays   In fact DDR is half the price of SD but is double the speed   Confusing eh?

I dont think they need more ram because It was working for ages and then on minday morning it worked...then he said it just stopped working...   I know its weird but wot he says

That's the way 98 works   One moment something works fine the next CRASH ERROR REBOOT. Had 98SE for 3 years on my home PC and 98SE in school since they got the 400Mhz P2 PCs Always had problems like that. Has he tried downgrading to 6? I always liked 6, was basic but worked fine

Could be barking up the wrong tree here, and this is only a wild stab in the dark, but I wonder if they have removed something from the registry, while removing WMP7, which is now stopping further installations?  Can't see why it would affect WinAmp or Real though.  Has he / she tried installing any other types of programs since this happened?

Try running DXDIAG from ... Start/run and see if that brings up a set of problems.

This may have been the original problem :

SYMPTOMS
After you install Windows Media Player 7 and restart your computer, your computer may stop responding (hang).
CAUSE
This issue can occur due to a conflict between Windows Media Player 7's Adaptec CD-Burning Plug-in and CD burning software already installed on your computer.
RESOLUTION
To resolve this issue, remove the Adaptec CD-Burning Plug-in from Windows Media Player:

Cant think why it wont let him reinstall it or cause the problems with ver 9.

If there is some kind of potential conflict,maybe he could try uninstalling any CD burning programs and seeing if either 7 or 9 then work and then reinstalling his burning software(thats assuming he has a burning program installed of course)

It looks as if windows system files have been corrupted or removed during installing and uninstalling Windows media Player, the best thing would be to reinstall windows 98se over the top of the present installation and that should help,

PS save all important data first in case
