OK not a fan of Instant Messaging
« on: July 04, 2003, 12:44 »
but has anybody any views on AOL's IM program downloaded and used on an ISP service other than AOL? For a friend who's grown up family have flown the nest but both use AOL to connect to the web.

Dowload Trillian.  It connects to them all.   Doesn't matter what ISP you use.

Yes, I have the *cough* Pro version.  ;D  It's not much different, other than you can add various plug-ins, i.e. for POP3 e-mail notification, and pop ups for when contacts come and go offline, however, without actually registering, you have to look 'elsewhere' for these features.  I also seem to have a problem inviting people into my conversations with the Pro version, but I'm not sure what the reason for this is.

I would try the free version first, Tony, and if you feel like upgrading, give me a shout.

;) ;D 8)

Cheers Simon,

I'll give the free version go first, like you say features such as knowing when friends are on line can be handy. I suppose like AOl's offering, you can pretend not to be on line if your not in the mood for chatting ?

Yes I believe you can, Tony.  What I do is not allow it to start with Windows, which you can set in File > Preferences > Basic Options.  You can also have it running but set your status as 'away'.

As I said, the pop up notifications are only available with the Pro version, but if you're using the free one, you get a sound when contacts come and go on and offline.

I'll be interested to see how you get on, as most people here don't like it, but I think it's much better than MSN Messenger.

By the way, most people that are on it from Pals, use MSN, so you'll have to register on MSN if you want to talk to us, which you can do easily through Trillian.

I use the free version, although I rarely have it running unless I am particularly trying to contact someone.  You can set alerts in the free version by right clicking the contact and choosing "set alert".  Unfortunately, if you choose a popup alert, unlike most IMs where the alert briefy appears to the right of the task bar and disappears on its own accord, you get a bog standard popup box which you have to click "OK" to get rid of.

Edit:  You have to go through the steps for each contact you want to set alerts for.

Yeah, with the *cough* Pro version, you can add a plug in for pop up alerts, which disappear automatically after about 5 seconds, like MSN.

The *cough* Pro version sounds much better than the freebie, Simon.  I think I may upgrade.   Is it installed over the top of the freebie, or is it a case of uninstalling the freebie and then installing the Pro?

You can install the Pro over the Freebie (and go back if you wish), but I must stress that the plug-ins are only available from the website if you officially register, as they are in a 'Member's Only' section of the site.  Of course, you may be able to find them elsewhere, from a Pal.   ;)

Also, I would just say again, I have had trouble inviting other people in to my chat window with the Pro version, but I can be invited OK.  Sometimes it works, and sometimes it doesn't.  The extra skins are fun though.   :D
