HP Laserjet 4 printer driver
« on: July 09, 2003, 09:43 »
Hi there,

Does anyone know where I can find the HP Laserjet 4 printer driver for Windows98? I have been searching all over the web but unable to download any. Do you know whether I can install this printer driver on my Win XP workstation? I have a 16-bit software which prompt ?Print driver: winspool failed to get orientation?.

Hi CFH, and welcome to the forum.

Juat had a quick look on the HP support site, and it says this:
Quote
Printer Driver for Windows 95/98.
This driver is included with the printer drivers that come with the Windows 95/98 operating system software. Use the Add Printer button or Printer Wizard to install this printer.
[/size]

Is that any help?  Hopefully one of our more technical people will be along soon with something for you.

Here's a list of available drivers / software, but I expect you've already been here:

This Site suggests that there is no such thing as XP drivers for any HP laser printer but I'm guessing it's wrong

If you plug the LaserJet 4 into an XP workstation, it will automatically detect and install the driver for you.

This works with pretty much all of the HP printers manufactured before XP was launched.

If the downloaded drivers already forund for you dont work CFH,then if what Simon says is correct, you already have them on your 98 CD.
I had a similar problem with some sound drivers on a PC last year and they were on the CD but windows couldnt recognise them while installing.
I had to explore the CD,locate the correct drivers and copy them to my hard drive.
After doing this it was simply a case of "telling" windows to look in that location for them instead of on the CD   :-*

Hello everyone,

Thanks for the suggestion but it didn't really help. Firstly, I cannot find the driver in HP websites and on the Win 98 CD. My workstation which is running Win XP is currently connected to the HP printer and I think it is using the driver for XP (plug and play). As mention in my previous message, the reason I need the driver for Win 98 is because one of my 16 bit application (running on my XP workstation) is prompting an error with regards to printer driver. My guess is to use the Win 98 driver and hopefully, it will solve the problem. If you go to Printer properties on your XP workstation, there is an 'Additional Drivers...' button in the Sharing TAB. This additional drivers will allow you to install driver for 95/98 on my XP workstation. I am not sure whether this will solve my error but I am just trying my luck.

Sorry to hear that you are still having problems.
Its strange that it says they are on the 98 cd,I have just looked on one of mine and there isnt one for any HP Laserjet, theyre all deskjet ones  ???

CFH.... its wierd XP doesn't find your printer as I run a HP Deskjet off of my XP work station.

I clicked on my printer and looked for new drivers and this is what it came up with.. see link below.

CFH, it's worth a try but I don't think installing the 98 driver under XP will solve the problem for you. The Additional Drivers section in the printer driver allows windows to store different printer drivers for other operating systems to be used when another PC connects to the printer over the network. I'd be very surprised if the 16-bit subsystem uses one of these drivers rather than the XP one.

Could you let us know what error message you get from the 16-bat application - maybe we can help with that.

Hi Adept,

The error message is 'Printer driver: winspool failed to get orientation. Settings of orientation may not work'.
