thx sandra see PM. i don't seem to have the original drivers supplied on any disc if the update goes pear shaped.  is it a fairly safe procedure.

Should be ok as its running on mine  
But if the problem is ok with replacing the missing registry files then it may be as well to leave it for now.
If it aint broke dont fix it  

Edited to add this :
It was just an idea as I thought that the IDE controller drivers may have been corrupted and that would have replaced them Dave.But if the other fix has sorted it then leave it for now

thats what i was thinking as well  ^-^.  presumably the original drivers came off the windows disc when i reinstalled the OS after the last HD failure. whatever, thanks again for all the interest.
