Sound probs
« on: August 13, 2003, 15:10 »
Hi all.
have set up pc according to the instructions but one thing eludes me.

Just can't get the rear speakers working, sound is on board AC97 5.1, and the speakers are creative 5300. all the leads are colour coded until it gets to the terminals on the comp, I then have to use: mic(centre & sub). line in(rear channels), line out(front channels). All the front speakers and sub work, if i swap the front and rear over  then the rear work but not the front. Crazy or what :-X

Os win XP home if that helps.

Is there a setting in the bios for enabling 5.1 as opposed to 2.1 Mustapha ?
You say that the rear channels are into LINE IN,that doesnt sound right  :(
Can you tell us which mobo you are using so that we can see the connections available or put a link or a pic of the mobo on here to save us searching  :-*

Incidentally my speakers threw me when I got some new ones, only 2.1 for me but with a subwoofer, they were colour coded for the connections using the speakers and subwoofer itself as junction boxes but I hadnt noticed that at first  ::)

hi Sandra, no piccy not figured out XP yet, but mobo is MSI-670 with nvidia nForce-2 chipset, i know the setup sounds wrong using the mic and line in, but they do work, but where the hell you stick the mic is beyond me. (no rude comments please) ;D

On the front of the book it also says K7N2 Delta Seiries

I just had a look in my sound properties as I am having a problem with getting audio out from my onboard sound card.
There is a setting in it for different speaker setups, maybe you need to set it as 5.1 in there instead of the normal stereo that it prbably defaulted too ?

I have attached a sreenshot of mine for you to see it.
Go to control panel, sounds and audio devices then advanced in speaker settings :doggie:

This is a link to the K7N2 Delta series :

http://www.msi.com.tw/program/products/mainboard/mbd/pro_mbd_detail.php?UID=436

I cant see anything about the MSI 670
It does say this on those specifications :

Digital 5.1 format for full surround sound effects (MCP2-T only)

Does it have that anywhere on your board ?

Cheers Sandra, your'e right about their website, my boards not there (obsolete already?) only got the thing on Tuesday.

Have checked all the sound properties, as per your pic, and checked the bios. all seems ok. looks like i'm gonna have to ring the damn company and listen to some part time tech wizard telling me it's not their fault. ;D

Well I found out why I am having a problem with the sound out of my onboard AC97 quite quickly.
It doenst have Line Out  :(
Only line In,Mic In and Speaker Out.
So looks like I am stuck with it unless I splash out for a seperate soundcard  :(

That's the same as mine Sandra, your speaker out is the line out.
according to the book the connections are.
mic center+ sub
line in rear channels
line out/speaker front channels

So if one of us can suss it out we'll both be surrounded (by sound) ;D

Well tried mine in speakers out with volume turned down to almost off and it works Mustapha.
Seems to be able to have it set quite high without distorting to so I have left it at the normal level for my PC volume and its even playing through my home cinema amp now.
Just need to tidy up the wires which are going diagonally across my lounge at the moment from the PC to the TV and see if I can get a switch between the two sets of speakers so that I dont have to keep unplugging them and swapping over,(although it may be easier and cheaper to just buy a new soundcard with speaker and line out)  :)
