Simon,I think that you have a VIA chipset on your PC dont you ?
Try this, amongst other things this USB patch says :

Under Win2000/XP: This patch will save all register values in the memory before a system enters Stand By mode and then restore those registers when the systems resumes. This therefore avoids the situation where USB devices are not ready for use after a resume from Stand By mode.

Thats where I was going :)

However you will find that electrically the ports will be combined inside the machine so you can still get problems :(

Do you get the same problems if the other USB devices are not connected? Another thing worth checking is if you have the latest  motherboard drivers as, reading several forums, people have been having problems with ALI chipset motherboards e.g. http://www.computing.net/windowsxp/wwwboard/forum/65902.html

It also mentions the power issue over at:

Some PCs have problems with bus-powering over USB.  This is not a modem problem, it just means there's not enough power coming out of your PC to drive it.  It tends to affect PCs that are based on AMD Athlon motherboards and/or USB drivers using VIA chips.  One of two courses of action should solve the problem:

- Purchase a USB hub, with its own power supply
- Install an internal PCI-powered USB card

Which also gives a link to:

for a patch for XP to use USB correctly with ADSL modems - if you get the disconnection when transfering data problem.
hey promised the earth! Then delivered mud.
Technically it did meet the spec.

No problems transferring data, Dack.  In fact, I have no problems with it at all (unless Pipex happen to be down like they were briefly this afternoon), once it's up and running.  My motherboard is an Abit KG7, with a VIA chipset - I've not actually heard of an Ali.  Thanks for you research though, Dack.  :)

I've just installed the patch Sandra gave above, and I have rebooted twice, with positive results both times, so it looks like that patch may have worked - thanks Sandra!   :-*
