BOOT UP......boooooooring
« on: September 12, 2003, 10:38 »
Nearly nodded off at Boot Up ?

Well I use Startup Control amd it's sister program Startup Monitor you can download them Here
If you leave applications to their own devices, you'll find many on install will nominate themselves to load at startup. Thus slowing bootup and hogging resources needlessly. I have 35 programs that have nominated themselves to load at startup, but have cut that number to 10.

Anyway, what with security software scans, firewalls, temp monitoring pograms, log in.... etc etc etc bootup still takes 2 mins 10 seconds. So I have started using the 'Hibernate'option, for those not familiare with the Hibernate option, you can find it by going to Start> Settings> Control Panel > Power Options> Hibernate Tab [I'm using W2K]

So now, in a morning it just takes 45 seconds to get back to where I was when I closed down the night before.

It's about time that somebody managed to tame the "Boot-Up Monster" too!  Thanks Tony.

I use "standby" mode to the same effect Tony.

My machine is usually at the logon prompt shortly before the screen has come on - approx. 20 seconds  ;)

Strangely enough, when I moved to my new case, the PSU that was upplied with it wouldn't support standby. It would switch off correctly, but not bring itself back out of standy when switched back on.

I haven't been able to find out why ??? Needless to say the PSU from my old machine is in the new case now ;)

Adept I used to use Standby, like you say it's a lot quicker, but my PSU fan is such a noisy bugger, it's grand to hear the silence  ::) Plus this way I can leave it on all night without waking the dead  :o

That's why my old PSU is so good Tony. It actually switched off, so there is no noise and as far as I can tell the machine is completely off.

Something to do with the Power Management settings too I think.

thats exactly what happens with mine Sean, dead to all intent and purpose. But just hit the power button and its back too desktop [well after 'GoBack' gives you the option to revert HDD]no boot up, no loading progs. But I only get that if I highlight the 'Hibernate' option, Standby leaves the PSU fan running, and does not go through the GoBack revert option.
