Skipping MP3s
« on: September 26, 2003, 23:16 »
A friend has just e-mailed me, saying that his downloaded MP3s 'skip' when being played.  He is using Windows Media Player (or possibly Winamp - waiting for comfirmation).  Any ideas on what could be causing the 'skipping'?  I'm going to see him tomorrow night, so would like to have an answer to go with, or at least a clue!

Check if his ordinary audio cds play ok on which ever player hes using Simon if it does then it sounds like a codec problem in his player.
Try uninstalling and reinstalling the latest version of the player  :)

OK, thanks Sandra.  But what if playing a normal CD skips too?

I would have thought that was a cpu or memory problem  :(
Has it only just started ?
Maybe reinstalling the player would sort it whatever the fault was  :)

Well, let's hope not!  I've had a look on Google and found a couple of other forums where people have asked the same question, but haven't found a definite answer.  The general consensus of opinion seems to be that even if downloaded MP3s skip during playback, once burnt onto a CD, they play OK.  Other people have said that the skipping occurs in WMP, Winamp, Real, or whatever, which points to something other than the software doesn't it?

I'll find out a bit more when I go round there tonight, but any other ideas in the meantime would be appreciated.

Hiya,
Is the MP3 skipping, or is it just making a funny, screeching noise?
The later of these is a result of files planted in the Kazaa Network by the RIAA/Equivalants... They're trying to stop people downloading them by corrupting, then distributing...

The newest version of Kazaa Lite apparently has a list of Blocked IPs that it wont download files from...

Hi WD, no it was definitely 'skipping', and he uses Limewire Pro, which is spyware free, not Kazaa, which isn't.

He tried to demonstrate the problem, but as per usual in these matters, it didn't do it when I was listening!  I think maybe he might have had lots of things running at once, and it was making things work a bit harder than usual.   ::)

Just to update, Kazaa Lite is spyware free, Kazaa (Sharmon Networks) is bloated with it...
