Freeserve Broadband - Experiences??
« on: September 08, 2003, 11:43 »
Hi everyone,

BT have finally gotten round to upgrading my exchange to enable broadband connection (Wahey!).

I've just signed up this morning for Freeserve Broadband. They've got a good deal on at the moment - 30 day trial, free USB modem, free connection.

Has anyone here got any experience with Freeserve BB (good or bad)? What sort of speeds will I get? How long would a 10MB file take to download?

Cheers
Phil

Congratulations on getting BB Phil!  Not sure if anyone is on Freeserve here but I'm sure they will speak up if there are.

My mate up here in Fife loves it, although I have 3 friends all connected to the Dunfermline exchange (1 is Big_Boss) all get way above average connection. The one on freeserve get's downloads of 61Kb/s but he is disapointed when it is that so he must be able to get more. Has never said a bad thing bout it ever  :o

Depending on where you are getting the file from Phil you should get around 3mbs per minute so a 10 mb download would be just over 3 minutes.
If you are on P2P transfers then that can drop dramatically as it depends on who you are getting it from, how many simultaneous uploaders and whether they have their bandwith throttled :doggie:

Hi everyone,

Ive been with Freeserve for 3 weeks now and can happily say that I have had no problems with my connection or anything else for that matter. One slight niggle is that occassionally I try to connect and get a message saying 'no dial tone'. A quick restart of my PC sorts this out - must be something to do with the modem (Alcatel Speed Touch)?

Glad its going ok for you Phil, its probably the USB drivers for the modem that arent always being loaded prpoerly so if you reboot the pc it does them next time around  :)
