Topic: Can't access http: Port 80 broken

Major problem!   I got fed up with too many popups while surfing the web, so I downloaded Adware. It deleted about 100 different things off my computer. Now I can't access the web.
More specifically, I can still see the other computer on my home network, and copy files either way.  I can ping addresses out in the big wide world, and get a reply (I have a cable modem). If I use dial-up, I can log on to AOL and read my Email.
   But I can't access web pages  
I've tried internet explorer, and AOL. I've tried repairing IE5.5  But I still get the usual 'cannot access' kind of error. My other computer is still happily accessing the web over the same cable modem.
I also have one other piece of software that uses port 80 to talk to a program on a video thingy across the room, and it can't see the video thingy either.  So maybe port 80 is broken.
Anybody got any ideas?
I'm running Windows ME.  I've tried system restore, but it failed.  I fear I might be looking at reinstalling Windows.

Its more likely that something essential to port 80 being open thats been removed.
Port 80 is the standard HTTP port I think
Can you look in the quarantined part of adaware and see if anything obvious is listed that may cause your problems ?
If you cant I would restore all and then remove a small group of items when you run adaware again, checking at each stage that you can access the web again and use your port 80, before removing the next batch.
A bit time consuming but hopefully quicker than a full reinstall

Assuming you have a Firewall, try removing IE from the 'Allow' list, and let it ask again, obviously then saying Yes.  Also, depending on what Firewall you have, it might be worth checking that Port 80 is not being blocked for some reason.

I tried restoring everything from the Adware quarantine, but it didn't fix my problem.
The firewall is in the router, and the other machines on the router are working fine.

Have you tried swapping the output ports/cables over, on your router, Leon?

Leon, I hate to have to tell you this, but I have a similar setup to yourself and experienced exactly the same problem a few months ago.  My son downloaded some software and then did a full adaware scan.  Just like yourself, it found and deleted over 100 spyware components (2 or 3 was the maximum I ever found before that).  The computer would then not connect to the web.  I tried restoring all the components, I tried just about everything.  The machine went into a professional repair shop and they spent hours on it too before eventually resorting to a clean install of Windows.

I dont think it will be the router/hub Rodders unless its just a weird coincidence  
Thanks for your list , it confirmed that port 80 is the one for HTTP as I thought  
Was GATOR one of the things that adaware removed by any chance Leon ?
