i forgot to say that the drive i got (maxtor diamond max plus 9) came from maplins. £120 in store price.
no manual or software but i reckon its a pretty good deal.

Glad you managed to sort it Dave,at least you can look forward to a Merry Xmas now trying to fill yourself with mince pies ,turkey and booze and your drive with lots of films and stuff ;)

How long did it take to format the drive this time by the way ?

it only took just over 40 minutes. i was expecting more like 2 or 3 hours. fingers crossed this one lasts more than a few months.

Bet it takes a lot longer if you do a " Fill with zeroes " on it  ;)
