NOT AGAIN !
« on: December 22, 2003, 23:34 »
Hello. The problem i have previously sent in as "Recurring problem" is starting to happen again - programmes being minimised and being returned to the desk top. I am really at a loss now because i thought we had got this one beat.
I have now shutdown the ati icon, and disabled xp sticky keys as previously advised.
I have also tried reducing the hardware acceleration as previously mentioned using Control Panel-Display-Settings-Advanced-Troubleshoot, but when trying to run the game i got a message Direct X reports there is not enough video memory to run the game.
I have also noticed my 6 channel surround sound being reset to 2 channel mode when i run a game, but i dont know if this is connected, and an intermittent crackling nise from the right speaker when playing some games, but music CD's play perfectly  - though i have to manually change back to 6 channel sound each time.
Is there anything else i can try ?

The only thing that I can suggest is that the graphics card has an intermittent fault  ???
Any chance of trying a different one for a few days, even if it means going back to an older one ?

Someone else had this problem recently, PWS.  How are you setting the speaker settings?  I think if you go to Control Panel > Sounds and Audio Devices, you should get the screen below.  Click the Advanced button and set your speaker settings, which then should remain as the default settings.

Thank-you. I have been setting the speakers using :
Control Panel-Sound effect manager-Speaker Configuration. I will try as you suggest.
Just going back to the minimising problem, there were previous suggestions that Norton Security may be causing the problem. Do you think i should un-install it or disable it, and if its a graphics card/driver issue, do you think i should invest in a better card if my ATI Radeon 9200 series is not up to the job ?

As long as you are not playing on line games the I would uninstall anything that you can easily reinstall again later, so that you may be able to eliminate the cause.
I still think that its going to turn out to be the card but whether it needs a better one I cant say, that model should be ok, especially as its worked ok sometimes  ???
