Displaying Website at a Trade Show
« on: January 29, 2004, 04:30 »
Hi, one of my website clients is going to be in a big trade show here in Philly. I have an idea to set up a computer at the trade show for this client with her website in full screen mode, and let the general public surf . My plan just have the mouse and the screen for people to walk by and take a look. In full screen mode it looks great, and seems more like an interactive presentation then a site. But I want to stop the public from being able to close the full screen window, and stop them from doing anything else on the computer. My guess is that there's some software for making cd presentations that might work. Anyone have an idea for doing this and making it so the public only has access to the web site content we want them to see? Other thoughts also appreciated. Thanks.

I?m not sure that I well understood what you?re thinking to do, although some techies or members may help you.

But in the limit of my understanding, I like to tell you honestly that, when I visit any site, and feel that I don?t control things as I want, I don?t really appreciate that site and don?t visit it again.

Maybe you have your reasons for that. But for the moment, I see things only in that way.

Just a personal opinion.

Sorry.   :-\

not at all Joudi. One of the sites I make is specifically for artists. It has limitation but it looks good on most browsers. If you go here: http://www.SelvinGlass.com Press F11 if you are using IE and it will switch to Full Screen mode. Then right click on the tool bar and select 'auto hide'. The sites have no 'direction', you basically click on the galleries or the images. It's not a forced presentation like a flash intro, you just click on any of the thumbnails to see enlargements. I'd like to just have this available to viewers at a trade show, but I don't want them closing the window or messing with other programs on the PC. I'd like to somehow only have the site available, sans toolbars. I hope this makes sense!

This Microsoft Knowledgebase article will tell you how to automate the "Kiosk" mode TG.

Unfortunately this only does 1/2 a job as it doesn't stop anyone from pressing Alt-TAB or Ctrl-Alt-Delete to get out of the program.

If you are able to change browser, Opera's Kiosk mode is far more comprehensive. Have a look here.

Hey Adept, Kiosk mode works perfectly. I do not intend to make the keyboard available, just the mouse. I will also disable the mouse right click button.

Only problem is that Kiosk mode does not work on Windows XP, as it has enhanced security. I have not found a work around but will explore Opera.

I do have a old Sony laptop running windows 98 which would work perfectly. However, I can't find a specific adapter I need to plug in an external monitor. I have to start digging! I'm planning to make a cabinet where the computer will be locked below and a small hole will feed the mouse and monitor wires. You'll basically see just a mouse and a screen. If I could get a touch screen I could even skip the mouse!  ;D
