Why is it that when I start surfing my resources show 80% and when I check it before closing down it shows 40%. ???

Its the percentage being used by your computer Lona,ie your ram, virtual memory and cpu (I think).
Each time you run a program it uses a bit more of them and the longer you are surfing and the more windows you have open the more it will use.
Things like Incredimail and Cd Burning Progs and P2P stuff have a dramatic effect on my computers resources so if I am using any of those I shut as much as I can down on the rest of my pc.
Occassionally you may find it helpful to reboot your computer as even when you think you have closed some programs they are still running in the background unless you have exited fully from them  :-*

Unfortunately this is where Windows has a flaw in the way it uses Virtual Memory ... its supposed to manage it ... mismanage is probably the correct term  ::) If you are daring, you could specify the amount of virtual memory Windows has and that way you can be sure of having memory available ... instead of Windows using it in an expanding VM that takes it a while to release

I'm not sure whether XP is any better, I would hope so ... as soon as I've got to grips with it, I'll find out  ;D >:D

I specified my own VM in XP, and it works fine.  I set mine (Min & Max) to 3 x RAM, so 512 x 3 = 1536Mb.

THIS THREAD may also be of interest.   :)

I always think its worthwhile doing a reboot after a couple of hours Lona.  XP appears to just as bad at hogging and wasting resources than previous versions.  A reboot will stabilise your system.

Ahhh thats where previous versions of Windows were better .. they had this built in .. it is a feature called crashes or alternatively blue screens of death  ... and here was me thinking it was a flaw  >:D >:D    ... it was a deliberate software trick to make allowances for the lack of good memory management  ;D

Just leave it set on auto and let windows sort it out unless its causing you major problems Lona.Clives ideas a good one,to reboot every so often if your using it a lot,you can use your 2 hour cutoff as a timer  :-*
