Title: computer won't switch off

if i use my computer for anything other than a brief period it won't shut down. the screen will go blank except for a flashing cursor on the top left. any-one incountered this before, or have a fix.

I've experienced this problem particularly with Win 98 and Me.  You haven't said which operating system you are using but the problem is probably caused by a program still running in the background.  Try going into Task Manager and ending each process individually and see if that allows a proper shutdown.

As Clive says, this can be caused by particular programs not ending correctly. It can also be caused by power management settings and sometimes can be corrected by updating the BIOS.


Let us know what OS you are using and we should be able to come up with some instructiosn for you Adam :)
