Title: My Own Website
Post by: Whiskas on December 29, 2002, 22:56
Can anyone recommend somewhere that I can get a free website and what I can use to build it that is idiot proof?

This free one does it for me, Whiskas.

NDO (http://www.ndo.com/index.htm)

Once you're all signed up, go back and apply for a NDO+ account, which gives you a free .org.uk, or .co.uk domain name into the bargain.  Choose the name wisely, since you won't be able to change it afterwards.

The service is very reliable and I've used them since 1998.  The only catch is moving your free domain name somewhere else -- it'll set you back 125 smackers.

It's a subscription-free service, but you do have to pay for your time online when dialling up to your account, to make changes, or upload pages.

To write your pages, have a play with MS Frontpage Express, which you'll probably find on your system somewhere.  Otherwise, I believe it's still downloadable from Miserysoft.  I'll have a rummage for the URL.

I used Cutsite Builder Whiskas. Goto www.globalscape.com for free trial. It's definitely idiot proof and I am the proof ;D ;D

The only one I know that seems to be reliable is one from www.marhost.com  Whiskas.
It has no banners or ads but you have to accept some spam e mail from an affiliate which is about 2 per week in my experience( I just delete them as they come in now  ;) )
I recommended them to a friend last week and it took about 3 working days to get it set up but after that its fine.
I have only used Namo Web Builder and transferred stuff by an FTP prog but I noticed it now has templates and some kind of built in software to do it all for you  :-*

I haven't got frontpage express Rodders so if you can find the url that would be great.

What do you have to pay after the free trial Lona?

Hey Whiskas, i've got some spare hosting that im not currently using so if you need it, its yours.  Also, if you need any help constructing the pages, i'd be happy to help you there too.

Let me know.

Corky

EDIT*  I've also got the domain "theflavour.net" that may be of use to you.

I will set the server up, all you will need to do is upload some files via FTP to a directory on the hosting.

Don't worry, i will explain it all for you :)

The Cutesite Builder trial is free Whiskas but only for 30 days then you have to buy it. I was too miserable to buy it, hence the reason my website is in limbo. ;D

It's too soon after Christmas for me to spend much money :'(. I tried the ICQ websites which set it all up for you and all you need to do is chose the colours etc but I couldn't quite get to grips with that ;D

Whiskers, Frontpage Express might be hidden away on your machine - try Start Button > Search > All Files and Folders then type in Frontpage, and it might find it for you.  Then you can copy it to your desktop for next time.   :)

I tried that and it brought up front page express, when I clicked on it it had some folders but when I went into them it was blank ???

I've not really been asleep, honest!  After doing a serious amount of digging, it's starting to look horribly like Frontpage Express was discontinued after Win98!

Until a better freebie turns up, here's Arachnophilia (http://www.arachnoid.com/arachnophilia/) to play with in the meantime.  Recommend you do a bit of swotting-up first, Whiskas.   ;)

See above, Lona.  Don't know about ME, never used it.  Seems Frontpage Express died with W98, like Rodders said.   :'(

You need something like Cute FTP to upload, I think you can get that from Download.com , but I'm not sure ... will have a look. Its not free tho  :-";"xx

That's a bridge we'll cross when we come to it, Whiskas.  Once you've got your page(s) looking good and working properly, it's just a matter of downloading one of the free FTP clients to upload your stuff to your webspace.

You can even use Internet Explorer to do it, if you add the FTP address of your webspace to your Favorites folder.  I often use this method for 'quick and dirty' results.   8)

I've got a script that allows you to upload straight from your computer to the website.  There's no hastle involved, all you have to do is click browse, find the file on your hard drive and click go.

test it here:  http://www.raid-designs.co.uk/uploads/upload.php (http://www.raid-designs.co.uk/uploads/upload.php)

Well I found www.tripod.lycos.com which is free and has a site builder which does it all for you.

I had a go at it and it was really simple although a bit slow. My only problem now is what to put on it ;D so far just a load of drivel but it will do until I learn how to do it properly.

Title: Re:My Own Website
Post by: bat69 on December 30, 2002, 22:24
My site is hosted at Lycos ... but I haven't done much to it for a looooooong time. I must get my files from the other PC and do a lot more work on it. I used Dreamweaver 4 to create mine tho

I must get the files and change the advert tho  ::)  ... it has been a long time since I did any work on it  :-[

I remember years ago there were sites like Geocities and such all over the place. Unfortunatly I dont know many free places since I have been hosting my own domains for many years now. My Personal Site (http://www.travisjmac.com) and My Computer Site. (http://www.burlingtoncomputers.ca)

Best of luck trying to find a host. Programs to build a site are also not my specialty. I know of things like dreamweaver and frontpage but not experienced with them. To build a site I usually design a template in Photoshop then cut the template and code it in notepad then I transfer it to a webserver and use something called telnet to program in linux on a program called pico and somtimes vi. But I dont think its an idiot proof method.

Could you find a home for this, Whiskas?

The all-important dimensions are: width=165 height=75.  I've optimised it for a white backgound, so if you decide to use it and then change colour schemes, or use a background tile, just let me know.   :)

Not really my field, this, but what format have you used?  Perhaps you need to save it as a .jpg, or a .gif?   ???
Title: Re:My Own Website
Post by: Adept on January 11, 2003, 11:47
PSP is as good as anything to create a banner Whiskas.

If the image is not appearing, check that you have used the correct filename in your HTML code. Don't forget that upper and lower case letters are treated as different so for example EXAMPLE.jpg is not the same file as example.jpg or Example.jpg

Oh no it hasn't!  Whiskas, are you sure that the URL for the graphic is not pointing to a local address, i.e. somewhere on the hard drive of your PC?  If that is the case, it would explain why only you are able to see it.  8)

Whiskas, can you post it here, as an attachment, so we know what we're looking for, please?
Title: Re:My Own Website
Post by: Corky on January 11, 2003, 12:27
If it is in the same directory as the Whiskas World graphic, the url should be

Code: [Select]
[img]http://whiskassupreme.tripod.com//sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/thefile.jpg[/img]
Without the [img] code though :)

Hope that helps.

OK slightly behind this one..again! and i cant be arsed reading 5 pages worth..sorry.

Has anyone that wants ease of use ever used these....

http://www.moonfruit.com (http://www.moonfruit.com)

There very good for flash pages, i used em myself once just to see what it was like...but personally i found them too limiting. For a newbie though they are excellent...i think they still do a free trial.
