Title: Record Deck

I'm trying to find a record deck that plays 78s. My brother-in-law has a huge collection of Frank Sinatra 78's and nothing to play them on. Anybody know where you can buy one of these. :)

Maybe Ebay or have a look around secondhand shops Lona.
I dont think that anyone will still make them these days  :(

For the benefit of our younger members a 78 was the equivalent of a CD back in the days when Clive was in short trousers  :o

They were heavy black discs made of a hard plastic type of material called shellac, that played at 78 rpm and were about 12 inches in diameter.
You could get almost 5 minutes of not very good quality audio, in mono of course, on each side  :(

I had a wind up gramaphone, made by His Master's Voice (HMV), right from when I was a child, up to about 15 years ago.  It was one of the more modern ones, without a horn, but I was so skint one time, I sold it in a local second hand shop for £12 to buy food and fags!  Bloody shame, as it could have been worth quite a bit had I held onto it.

Is this the same as a normal turntable? or does it have to be something special to play 78's?

Sorry of being soooo young  ;D but are 78's the same as Vinyls?

Thanks for that url, DJ. :). Unfortunately these are just turntables and need to be connected to a hifi system and I doubt if they would play 78's. I have a turntable of my own, similar, but it only plays 45s and 33s. It's a standalone record player I was looking for. There are plenty on ebay but as it's for my sister's 70th birthday, I can't very well give her second hand goods.  ;D

Simon, I still have an old box HMV record player but you don't wind it up. It plays from the mains. :)

Excellent sites DJ but I was trying to keep my price to under £100. There is one advertised in the national press I saw but it is £169 and well out of my price range. I will bookmark those 2 sites and I might have to spend more than I first thought.
