There can be so many causes Jon :(
When did it start happening, was it after adding any new parts, programs or peripherals ?
Which OS are you using ?
Do you get any error message or does it just freeze on you ?
-
yesterday i put in a new hdd and installed xp pro on it. all ok. but i was using it as a slave b4 and it crashed then. [twas a games hdd]i think it maybe msn messanger feckin it up....
i dono mayb itsa hardware prob?
is there ne software which wil determin the problem. if there is one. and yer it dus jus freeze
jonnnnnnnn

Hiya Jon,
Whilst this has absolutely nothing to do with your 'Crashing' problem, you might like to remove the forward slash from the URL of your Profile pic if you'd like it to show up here. ;)
-
Is the new drive just in as a single master now or have you got a slave attached too ?
You could download the hard drive diagnostics utility from whichever manufacturers site that has made your hard drive and run that to see if theres a fault on the drive ???
-
yer i downloaded tht hard drive thingy for my hard drive, it doesnt seem to av dun anyting. yer its a primary master. just one hard drive in at the mo. strange thing is, is that it crashed when it only have a couple of games on it? could it be a faulty disk???
thanks rodders for tht. iv been wondering why that wasnt working!!!!

i was in the event viewer and it came up with about 60 errors so i copyed it. i sed...
AMLI: ACPI BIOS is attempting to write to an illegal IO port address (0xcf8), which lies in the 0xcf8 - 0xcff protected address range. This could lead to system instability. Please contact your system vendor for technical assistance.
in english anyone. do i need a bios update??
jonnnnnnnnnnn
-
The utility you downloaded to check the drive with will probably need to be extracted and written to a floppy.
The site should have given sonme instructions about it.
Then you boot from the floppy and it will give options for checking the drive :)

problomo numero uno...no floppy drive :P but this program is called Active Smart [silly name] but whenever sumthing changes it notifys me. since taking off norton 04 it hasnt crashed. ******** :oTOUCH WOOD :o********* but it couldnt have been that. also i copyed tht thing "AMLI: ACPI BIOS is attempting to write...blah.. and windows help came up with this...
"Explanation
The system BIOS attempted to incorrectly access hardware resources concurrently with the operating system. This type of access cannot be synchronized and can cause system instability.
User Action
Contact the system vendor for an updated BIOS and follow the vendor's instructions for installation
"
??? ??? ??? ??? any ideas???????

i have an update for my mobo, but i dont have a floppy so can it be done by cd???
-
I wouldn't like to risk it, even if you're able to make your CD-ROM drive bootable. Even though you might only use a floppy drive once in a blue moon, they're always handy for this kind of stuff. They're not very expensive, but if you can't afford to buy one, try borrowing one - and make sure you also borrow the proper cable.
Tip #1: Check that the jumper settings on your HD are correct.
Tip #2: This might also be an excellent time to replace your MoBo battery if it's more than a year old.
-
yer they are usful heaps of crap. just recently my floppy just packed up...sods law, typical...yer i shall invest in another one.....there are 2 or 3 settings for master on my hdd
jonnnnn

today i left im safe mode...no crashing, nothing wrong, then rebooted..within 5mins it crashed...is it program then??
-
evryone has forgotten about lil fragile jon :'(...i can make a bootable cd using nero, but is it dodgy doin it from a cd??? :'( ???
-
I've only ever done it from a floppy, Jon. But you could always try it from a bootable CD. Then, if we don't hear from you, will assume that the update was designed to work from a floppy only.
How do feel about being a pioneer, matey? :horror:
Alternatively, you could always wait for a reply from someone sensible. ;)
-
its very tempting cos im really...p####ed off. and as its a nu hdd, ther isnt much on it so im not losin anyting ;D
+ i do have a laptop and a spare 40 gig hdd if it does shag up...... or i cud wait til 2mo and buy a floppy drive for a tenner and save all the hassle if it does #####up.... ;) ;)
-
I dont think it will be the bios thats at fault as it runs in safe mode without any problems you said Jon.
Which make and model number is your hard drive then we can verify that you have set the jumpers correctly.
Are there any yellow ! or ? in your device manager list as it sounds as if it may be a driver problem when its in windows fully :(
-
nope evrythin is savvy in the device manager...my hard drive is a Maxtor 6y080l0... there are like 3 or 4 settings for my master...
-
Theres only one correct one Jon ;)
Have a look at the attached pic, yours should be set as the top left one in it :)
-
all the jumpers were rite...i dno wot 2 do. shud i buy a nu floppy and update bios or not
by the way im at schoool ;D
-
as it was fine in safe mode it must be a programme thts shaggin it all up >:( shall i uninstall every programme...it must be a hardware thing cos it crashed even wen it was just a slave and only had a couple of games on it??!!?!? dya recon it cud be a faulty drive??
-
I would buy a floppy but not to update your bios, as its unlikely to be a bios fault, so that you could run the maxtor drive diagnostic utility so that you can check your hard drive :)
-
how would i do that??? the programme is called Active Smart and its pretty crap, would i just put it on a floppy and set it to boot frm floppy???????? could you find out *flutters eyelashes angelically* ::) ::)
god schools boring :'(
-
Its the "Powermax.exe" that you need Jon.
There are instructions on how to make a bootable floppy with it and a link to where to download it from here :
