Title: Trouble Downloading
Post by: BIG_J on April 21, 2004, 20:24
I am having some major problems with trying to get this bittorrent to work.  I am on a LAN with an OS of XP.  I have the latest version 3.4.2 and I click on the download, save it in a folder and then wait to connect.  Well after a minute or so I get this error urlopen error ('7, 'getaddinfo failed')>

I have no clue why it doesn't work, my roommate has the identical as mine yet his works fine, any ideas or suggestions or anything is always greatly appreciated

'getaddinfo failed' - Could that refer to an ad / pop up stopper, or a cookie blocker you might have installed?  Just guessing.  I don't have that much experience of Bit Torrent.   :-\

Wow, well to tell you the truth I just recently downloaded the yahoo toolbar with the added pop up blocker.  So would it be ok if I just turned off the pop up blocker, or should I just get rid of it all together??

Add-on toolbars in general are not good news, as many of them are loaded with spyware.  I can't imagine Yahoo being the exception to that rule, so if it were me, I would bin it.  If you want a pop up stopper, try the Google Toolbar, which I don't believe contains spyware, but I'm not certain.  There used to be two versions of it, a standard and an 'advanced', the 'advanced' version did contain a tracker, but there only seems to be one version now.

Better still, have you considered moving to an alternative browser?  Many of us on PC Pals use Mozilla, which contains a built in Pop Up Stopper, plus many other useful tools, not included in IE.  It's also less prone to the many security glitches found in IE of late.  We have two Mozilla threads at the top of our General Software Help (http://pc-pals.com/index.php?board=27) section.

I use Mozilla and Bit Torrent, and find it works OK, but sometimes if you fail to download a Torrent its because the tracker is down or overloaded, or in fact the file is dead because of no seeds. Its best to download any file on Bit Torrent as soon as you see it, as unlike other file sharing clients, you are only connected to people sharing that file. As soon as everyone has completed the file goes "Dead"
