I have a pentium 2 pc with a built in modem on the mother board ,, i know the pc was used in a network enviroment b4 i got it.. but it says that it does not recognise the modem ..or else it says thatthere is no modem connected any ideas in what i can do

Two possible things here:
1) The BIOS (Mainboard hardware controller) has the MODEM setting at DISABLED. Just go into BIOS and enable.
-or/and-
2) The modem drivers are not installed in Windows, so it doesn't really know what the modem is (it could be a soundcard!). Download the drivers for your mainboard make and model number from the manufacturers website.
