Title: I Was Hit!
Post by: Stormy on June 30, 2004, 01:11
I'm not sure what hit me but something did!  I ran adware and deleted what came up there but I think I still have the problem.  I cannot use my scan disk or defrag.  I was able to use the scan disk in safe mode but not the defrag.  When I try to run scan disk, it keeps going back and forth between "checking allocated files" and "checking folders".  Like something is running in the background but not showing up in the cntr/alt/del.  Im stumped.  I've just backed up a lot of my files as I have a bad feeling I'm gonna have to reformat my hard drive.  No matter what kind of scan I try to do, it freezes.  Any ideas before I clean house?  :-\

This happened to me once Stromy. I think if you do Ctrl, alt del and shut down nearly everything that's running in the backround then try again it might work. Also if you have task scheduler running that can stop your defrag so disable scheduled tasks.
Disable firewall and antivirus as well.  Hope this helps.

There's a little program called End It All (http://www.docsdownloads.com/enditall.htm), which kills anything running on your system at the click of a mouse, except, of course, Explorer and Systray.  That might help, or you could try running Ad Aware and Spybot in Safe Mode, with System Restore (XP / ME) temporarily switched off.

if it ends everything apart from explorer and systray on xp, the pc will restart. you need svchost running. :P

I have the "end it all".  It usually leaves explorer and systray running but that's it. But strange that this time explorer is not locked like it use to be and I also noticed that some sort of program was running my modem (I use a cable connection) so I went into the control panel and turned off the modem and that canceled that one out of the end it all, but something called "kernal32.dll" is locked and I can't shut it down.  I cannot locate where to find it either like the modem one.  I've tried all the above and still cannot use my scan disk or defrag.  I guess I'll be spending a good part of Saturday reformatting my hard drive and then reinstalling my programs.  :-\

Well, I'm no expert on the reg keys... mainly coz I can't be bothered going through them, but it looks like you have a few entries there. I'll wait for another techie to confirm.

Meanwhile, on the processes side, these look suspect:

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\mmtask.tsk
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\MPREXE.EXE
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\MSTASK.EXE
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\RESTORE\STMGR.EXE
C:\WINDOWS\TASKMON.EXE
C:\WINDOWS\SYSUPD.EXE

Kill them, and try using adaware 6 again and Spybot Search & Destroy.

I fixed it!  I won't have to reformat!

But aarrgghh!!! XUPITER!!!  That was the culprit!  >:(

That's the second time I got hit by them!  I figured I would give my system a really good look over before reformatting it.  And sure enough I found Xupiter in there reaking havoc!

That was a tough one!  Sheesh!  At lease I don't have to do the reformat now.  My scan disk and defrag also work.  Have a super weekend everyone, I'm a happy camper now!  ;D
