Title: smpt servers

hi i am having problems with my dads computer he have just gone onto bt broard band after using ntl world dial up and the problem is the e mail he can send it out using yahoo but he cannot recieve it i have contacted bt but they said its not thier problem and i have got to remove the ntl world smpt server i have looked through xp and i cannot find any mention of this can sombody please help i have also subscibed to hotmail and it is the same problem thanks james

Hi Nobby and :welcome:

SMTP is not specifically a part of XP, its part of the mail settings.
Are you using Outlook Express ?
If so go to tools/accounts then highlight the NTLworld account and remove it if you dont want to use that address anymore.
Check that your BT account is in there and in the properties that the POP 3 and SMTP are set correctly along with the correct username and password  :)

thanks for that i have just done it but i did not see a mention of bt in those drop down boxes do i now have to install a new isp ect because bt does not have on on its broardband service

Does BT not provide you with a pop3 mail service ?
I think they will have and should have sent you the smtp and pop settings along with your username and password.
If you have all your details then all you do is open the same box and click on Add, under the mail tab and then enter your details.
They may even have sent you a cd which would have set it all up for you apart from your username and password.
Either method should work  :)

BT does not provide email with their broadband service. They expect you to sign up to one of the free accounts e.g. Yahoo, and configure your email program to use that.

Unfortunately Yahoo do not allow POP3 access unless you have one of their paying accounts.

How can they charge so much for a crap service and not provide mail  ::)
They are one of the dearer ISPs too arent they, or is that just the £19-99 package  ???

Reading the FAQ on there seems to imply ALL their services

(though they probably throw in a premium btYahoo account for the top service)

Yes, the BT Broadband service is no frills and all you get for your money is a connection.  BT/Yahoo is more expensive but you get e-mail, web space, spam filters and antivirus protection.  But it's the same old crap service.  I should know!!   ;D

Actually, you can get a 'free' POP3 '@yahoo.co.uk' account, by signing up for the 'Yahoo Delivers' service (spam, basically), but then not ticking any of the subscription boxes.  That way, you get your free POP3 account, but none of the associated spam.  I think that's right, anyway.  Chorley Dave's the expert on this one!
